‘Old Joy’

‘Old Joy’ is a culmination of several different process based investigations initially using photography. But particularly this time round an intrigue in hand rendered colour upon photographs. Through hand rendering photographs, it allows me to put my own personal stamp on these places. Much as these places have had on me. Running parallel to these experiments were photographic/text manipulation tests that were based around an interest in odd and unusual scientific imagery predominantly ‘appropriated’ from second hand books and text from my own personal journals. Taking snippets from my personal thoughts/memento’s is something I always end up doing, making them public, for the world to see.

As for following through with these ‘text versus image’ experiments I felt they weren’t substantial enough to carry on with, but the use of text I kept, and particularly enjoyed using as I was becoming more interested in the use of ‘signage’, and what artists were using this method in their work. For example Tracy Emin.

As this curiosity in signage developed I started to become more aware of my surroundings, photographing new areas of my hometown Herne Bay I had never previously visited photography wise. An interesting new venture for, which was heightened further after visiting the latest Gordon Matta-Clark exhibition at the Barbican Centre. The ideas he put forward about our surroundings particular the idea that urban surroundings where metaphorical voids, gaps, and spaces that would survive through documentation and ephemera. His work was substantially based around urban decay, with people interpreting it as hostility, but in fact was an internal dialogue between Matta-Clark and such buildings. An un-spoken conversation communicated through the ‘re-adjustment’ and dissection of buildings such as Pier 52.

Much how Matta-Clark’s main location of work was downtown 1970’s New York, the main location of my work is present day Herne Bay…a set. A place that I have romanticised endlessly through art. Not dis-similar to Matta-Clark/downtown New York, Herne Bay (which sits on the south east coast of England) is going through the same. It is deteriorating. Due in part to the plight of fishing in the surrounding areas, and perhaps more importantly the disappearance of tourism. These counties (Kent & Thanet) were once herald as the kings of ‘The Great British Holiday’. Now all that exists is a wasteland of hyped up regeneration projects. Focusing on art as the saviour to the local economy.

Although the work is aesthetically based around Herne Bay, this time around the work has a more central idea. This being how visual information travels/translated and sorted. Which is an idea I have adapted from my last piece ‘That Mystic’, where it was more how language, but more importantly verbal information travelled. ‘That Mystic’ had an air of conspiracy about it, which I think ‘Old Joy’ has carried on. With the use of satellite imagery in the fanzines that exist alongside a series of prints & rendered photographs. I have a created a set of boundaries for these images to exist in. A ‘flow diagram’, forever repeating and going in on itself.

‘Old Joy’ is a collection of ephemera. It is temporary. Ink will fade, as paper will perish.

Now that this piece is at a stage of realisation, it has brought to my attention a few ideas and issues. Particularly the idea of ‘psychic geography’. This is the interest in examining the interaction between spaces and people, and is also a way of thinking about those spaces and people, in which it is assumed that the space has the upper hand and a desire to confound, betray, or destroy the people who inhabit it. Thus, the culprit of any crime is the space in which it took place (and possibly, by association, the people who designed that space).

I have also been curious about the escalation of mapping. Which has increased due to new global technologies available to the common man. The Internet, and more importantly Google maps (perhaps the most widespread mapping service). The Internet is itself a vast global map – if not of holistic global culture.

The Internet connects us to a vast global village, a place where we punch in our personal information, a place so easily accessible, a place where we now ‘exist’ socially. We are all part of it someway or another, and thus the world is now at our fingertips.

This series of images came about after a conversation with one of my tutors, we were talking about my interest in how information travels. No just spoken information, but also visual info.

I have also been thinking about how the reduction of imagery adds a focal point to an image, and by placing the image within a shape changes the entire aesthetic.

Art is something I have always had a passion for. At the very start of my making career I held an intense interest in collage and printmaking, and was applying both of these techniques to my pictoral study of my home town Herne Bay. My work up until recently, has always been about Herne Bay, as I find it an attractive starting point for any project, as I always want to celebrate and reminisce in it's post war glory.

As an artist my interests lay in several different processes. From printmaking, to photography, to drawing to assemblage. I always try and explore all of the different avenues of the tools that are available to me, this way I can always express, in some way or another, exactly the point I am trying to make. And this is what I like about my work, when I finally arrive at an outcome I feel suitably satisfied in what I have produced and in what material they are represented in.

My work lays somewhere between nostalgia and an interest in the human condition. Exploring memories and romanticism about different places and people. All through the different techniques I employ.

My art as it stands at the moment, shows an interest in conspiracy, mysticism and all things 'Top Secret'. The work is questioning of what people believe in, and of information that they deem important to their continuation of existence. It is a nostalgic catalogue of the 'larger than life' tales and mishaps of the late 20^th century. Bringing to light the events that have been laying under our noses this whole time.

The times, they are changing.

I'm currently in the process of writing my dissertation on the idea of 'The Use of the Artists Book Within The Early 20th Century Avant-Garde', so naturally I've been researching people like Fluxus, Ed Ruscha, Dada, Surrealism but most importantly (for these pieces) the Russian Futurists.

Their graphic and very striking 'posters' and books have seeped into my practical work, and I think I've fallen in love.

I've obviously been creating work along the theme of conspiracy, and in these graphic images I have included text relating to all of that business, but only as an experiment. I'm going to hopefully get to do some printing within the next few days, and these bad boys are at the top of my list.

My project is going seriously well at the moment, I've been able to realise and materialise a lot of ideas. From the pictures I hope you can gather that I've been heavily interested in conspiracy, mysticism and generally all things TOP SECRET.

I've also been playing around with a lot of different materials as well. I've been using wax a lot, which is something that I've become a bit obsessed with, I think this stems from the reading and looking of a lot of Joseph Beuys work.

As previously mentioned, I'm into all things top secret, which in my mind has manifested itself in the form of these keys. The international symbol for locking things away that you don't want anyone to see. The collection of keys themselves relate back to my overwhelming desire of collecting stupid things. But alas they have found themselves useful.

The army soldiers were actually a present from someone I used to work with, but that's not important. The things is with these soldiers, to me they represent what is right at the heart of probably every major conspiracy...the military (or army WTF).

Everyone conspiracy theory, every tale and every picture I've researched throughout this project so far has somehow related back to the fact that the army are a secretive bunch of wankers, probably spraying us all with chemicals from the sky.

I will let you know when some more stuff materialises.

'Outsider Art is the work produced outside the mainstream of modern western art by self-taught, untrained visionaries, spirtiualists, eccentric recluses, folk artists, psychiatric patients, criminals and others beyond the imposed margins of society and the art market.'

So, I've been making what I consider to be 'Outsider Art' recently. Low budget, low quality, but with loads of charm and fun. Fun in an art sense is not heard alot. It's been thrown around the studio alot these past couple of days, people not wanting to take their art too seriously, and I feel I'm not either.
My projects moving in the same way it was last year, collecting, making, compilling, organising, its all very non-descript at the moment. But I had a tutorial with this rad guy (who also happens to be an artist) Shezad Dawood.
He's helped me put label on all of this nonsense...and thats exaclty what is...nonsense. Why do I have to put a label on it? Streams of consciousness, organisation, fanzines...awesome.

Me and my friends took part in an exhibition recently. We took over a small section, but it felt good. The exhibition was called 'Back of the mind, tip of the tongue', I think you take your own meaning from that? I did whatever i wanted for it really. A photoframe filled with found/altered image, polaroid and a couple of other photographs.
Me Griff and Rachel each 'customised' a plank of wood.
Paul and his friend Barney executed something brilliant.
Me and Griff challenged ideas of ownership by first finishing our friend Rachels painting, then I thought it would be interesting to see how I felt if he signed one of my paintings. All in all a good show. It got a bit dry towards the end though, so me and Griff 'took' some beers and got wasted and played loads of Spider Solitaire.

Current project update:

I was in a bit of a rut about my current project. Until I had a tutorial with the fantastic Raine Smith. I've been collecting objects, some found, some bought. And they were just sat there in the studio doing nothing at all. So me and Mr Smith were discussing ways in which we could utilise them, and make them work for me. We came up with the idea of applying a set of 'rules' or a 'system' to a particular group of objects. For example, I would display a certain group of objects in the studio with the rule '10 objects I found in the street' or even '10 objects people gave to me'. This means that the objects would be on rotation every 1 to 2 days?
Another idea was to attach my own narrative and meaning to the objects. Using the device of a postal tags to attach to the objects.
I'm pretty excited about it, although I did forget to buy postal tags today!

My current project is a about a bag of 'Found Objects' I got my grubby little hands on. The projects still in its early stages, but it's definitely going to be along the lines of 'archiving' and 'organising'.
I also did a cheeky little Hasselblad camera workshop. Their medium format camera's, and cost more than my student loan.

This Kinetic Reaction.

Yet another new idea has manifested. 'This Kinetic Reaction' was spawned from the 'instant' book making session (where I made ten books in one night). I chose one of the books that I made for this idea. 'This Kinetic Reaction' is all about the idea of 'instancy'. The drawings are all really simple, and i even pushed them to the point of abstraction. Although it's a work in progress, I'm pleased with the results, and have also started to sew into them, which adds a certain 3-D element to them.

I quite like the little fellows though.
One's made completely out of articles about Andy Warhol.
Ones made out of photocopies of things.
And I think the rest are plain.
But I have themes to execute in each one.
I started the first one which is called 'This Kinetic Reaction', its pretty weird, alot of simple drawings, and I've also started to sew into it...never underestimate the power of a needle and thread.
